Throughout the time I’ve spent in English 1010, it has helped me to open my mind to the many opportunities within the writing world. I am not the strongest writer out there, but my involvement in writing this semester has helped me to become the writer I never knew I was. The course objectives for my English 1010 class include: learning the different rhetorical strategies, composing, sourcing, and critical thinking. I have learned how to use each of these tactics by writing a variety of different papers throughout this course. Learning how to use each of these strategies has helped me to improve my writing and also broaden my rhetorical knowledge. At the beginning of this course, I did not have any previous understanding on how to write rhetorically. In fact, I did not even know what it meant. By learning the meaning of it and allowing myself to apply it to my writing, I feel that I am now a well-rounded writer. One of the last papers I had to write in my English class involved an exploration paper. This paper gave me the freedom to explore whatever topic I wanted to learn more about. Along with my exploration paper, I had to create an annotated bibliography. As most students well know, a bibliography is a list of sources you include at the end of a research paper. This annotated bibliography is slightly different from the typical bibliography. This version allows you to list your source along with a summary, evaluation, and thoughts the reader had while reading the source. In my paper I listed eight sources total. This bibliography helped me when it came time to write my exploration paper. Both of these papers are linked at the bottom of the page. My favorite part about my English class was when we would get into small groups and share our rough drafts with our peers. At first I was unsure about sharing my paper with my group because I was worried what they would think of my writing. Although, once I started to get to know my classmates better, it became one of my favorite things to do. This helped me when it came down to writing my final drafts. The first paper I ever wrote in this class was a literacy reflection paper. At the beginning, I struggled writing the paper. I wrote it in broad terms and parts of the paper did not make sense. Although, I was lucky that I had the opportunity to share my paper with my peers to get feedback on what needed improvement. I have learned more than I ever would have imagined this semester in my writing class. I learned how to write a reflection paper, analyze different pieces of writing, and all the fundamentals I need to research. Learning how to write in each of these different styles will help me in the long run with other school papers that I will need to write. When I graduate from college, I will also have the knowledge that I will need in order to do well in the workplace. I think the biggest challenge I had this semester was learning how to write in great detail and length. I have never been one to sit down and pull out a five page paper in two hours. It takes me many hours of writing and revising before I consider my papers to be done. Overall, this course has been very helpful for me and I enjoyed my time.
