Most adults already understand that having a baby can create some significant stress on their already stressful lives. Babies can be high maintenance and tend to cry a lot in their infant years. What some parents may not understand is that this is a completely normal phase in the development of their baby. Yes, some babies do cry more than others, although, all babies undergo what is referred to as the “crying phase”. This phase is called the Period of Purple Crying. The Period of Purple crying is an important concept that I learned in my Human Development course. I am not yet a parent, although, in the near future I would like to become one. When the day comes for me to have a child, I will have the knowledge I need to care for my baby in the appropriate manner. I want to be the best parent I can possibly be and so I am happy this experience has added to my knowledge bank. The word Period indicates that these crying features do not last forever and will come to an end after the first 4-5 months of age. The word PURPLE is an acronym used to help parents remember the characteristics that go along with this stage in development. (Barr, n.d.) Then of course the term Crying indicates what the main issue is. When parents are not aware of this phase it can lead to some harmful situations. Shaken baby syndrome is a common problem related to this stage in development. Parents get frustrated with their baby because of persistent crying and they violently shake their baby causing head trauma or other injuries. This can result in permanent brain damage or even death in severe cases. It is terrible because this is an avoidable situation. (WebMD, 2017) For the sake of the baby and the parents, I think that more parents should be educated about this developmental stage. It is simple and easy to understand but can make a significant difference in the lives of the parents.
