I learned very practical information in my Health 1020 course. Before this class I knew very basic information about nutrition. I knew how important it is to get a variety of healthy foods in my diet, such as whole grains, fruits, veggies, dairy, and a little bit of the healthy fats. I also knew how important it is to exercise to maintain your weight and health. I didn’t know how important it is for you to intake the appropriate number of vitamins and minerals to help your body function properly. I learned the importance of nutrition during pregnancy. Nutrition during pregnancy was the most influential topic I learned in this class because I am a female and will eventually want to have children of my own in the future. I now have the background knowledge I need to be healthy before, during, and after future pregnancies. The other most important topic I learned during this course was how to design a healthy dietary pattern. During this course we had an assignment to track our eating habits for 3 days. During this time, I found an app that was easy to use and told me exactly how many macro nutrients I was taking in and how many calories I was taking in. This helped me to see the importance of eating healthy and watching out for added fats and sugars in foods that I eat. During this semester while taking Health 1020, I was also taking Human Physiology 2420 and Chemistry 1110. All three of these classes had content that overlapped each other. In my chemistry class, we learned about the different vitamins and minerals and the chemistry behind how these vitamins are used in the body. On top of that, I was learning how the minerals are used in the body for physiological functions in my human physiology class. Such as calcium which is used for muscle contraction. It super interesting when I learn something in my nutrition class and the information gets reinforced in my other courses.
